When your readers say that they want to know more about your character or that they cannot visualise them, your story is probably missing character interiority – that part of character development that is easy to overlook and difficult to do well. Character interiority refers to what happens inside the character: their thoughts, reflections, observations of events, their emotions, the sensations they experience within their bodies. In this masterclass, we will examine how experienced writers use character interiority to make their stories feel rounded and create meaning. We will ask, for example, what kinds of thoughts can a character have? And we will practice writing out some examples for characters in our actual story drafts. We will also examine instances when writers have eschewed using interiority in their stories and discuss why not. This masterclass is open to beginner and experienced writers.
